POLITICS: House Ethics Chair Likely to Be Replaced

The current chairman of the House ethics committee, Joel Hefley, who was responsible for Tom DeLay's three admonishments for ethics violations, expects that he has served his last day in that position. He also states that his dismissal will likely be viewed as retribution for his tough stance on DeLay's shenanigans, although he doesn't know in fact that is the reason.



Rep. Hefley, who has served as chairman since 2001, has tried to maintain some semblance of accountability and honesty in the House of Representatives. He and his ethics committee admonished DeLay "three times in a week last year for political and financial practices" that were shady, to say the least.

The GOP has shown that it stands behind DeLay, one of its top fundraisers, regardless of his inappropriate activities. This latest salvo further makes a mockery of the party's platform of "ethics" and "moral values."

Considering what we have seen from this administration so far, this hardly suprises me. This guy goes up against DeLay for buisness practices that are "less than honorable" and the Rebublicans boot him. Par for the course when the Republicans are concerned. There is no money or profit from honesty.

i can't believe our carefully protected process has gone so far down hill as to having our overseers controlled by those they oversee.
that is like having the internal affairs bureau of a police department answer to a lower PD sergeant... it defeats the whole purpose of internal oversight...

seriously, I am deeply disturbed by the actions of our representitives of the GOP... they should not support anything they would not personally do, and if that is unethical... then so is the whole party that supports those actions....

Tom has done nothing whatsoever. A very 'partisan" ultra-liberal in Austin Texas has the ability to get a baseless indictment from a "partisan" grand jury. This same liberal garbage got an indictment again a senator from Texas a few years back which was completely thrown out when it went to trial. This is nothing but sourgrapes "politics" from liberals. Before 1994 when the republicans took over there was no such rule. There is still no such rule for Democrats.

DrH, we've had this same argument before, in other threads. Ronnie Earle, the Travis Co. DA, has prosecuted twice as many Democrats as Republicans. He is not on a witchhunt with respect to DeLay; he's just doing his job. As for the indictment of K.B. Hutchison, Earle decided not to proceed with the trial; it was not "completely thrown out," as you put it.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on the appropriateness of DeLay's actions.

The bottom line is that the house ethics commitee needs to be above reproach...
they are the "police" of the house....
if they are corrupt or biased, then they need to be changed...
because they need to be respected enough to enforce ethics...

if they are shooting straight, then the US citizens need to back them....

Hefley wants to give the congress the right to over-rule supreme court desisions,
DeLay is a criminal who uses children's charity fronts to funnel illegal campaign contributions from corporate donors.

Will someone please flush?
We need to get this pile of stuff out of Washington.
