imho Hitler didn't care about anyone / anything being saved. he carried the war on long past any hope of victory, sacrificing thousands of his best people, just for him and his cohorts to linger a bit longer. as far as he was concerned all of Germany could burn if he went down.

as I unnerstand it Von Braun and the rocket team was mostly apolitical. joining the Nazi party was understood to be a career enhancer.

I tend to agree with you. I think von Braun was quoted as saying some of his promotions were 'by mail,' and not really a big deal.
