I remember reading something about when the first MiG-29s from Germany came over to do red flag exercises the pilots were asked to hold back as they could easily outmaneuver a lot of the USAF and other countries' jets.
I don't have a link, it's one of those things I'd just picked up somewhere.

No an anti vertigo system is fairly easy. It rolls wings level and flies straight ahead. They've had similar systems for a long time. It's almost an autopilot.

Its not the plane its tactics that wins.
Ask any navy F-18 top gun pilot.

The f-15 and f-16 are 20 years older then the mig-29.

The real plane to compare to the Mig-29 is the F-18 Hornet.

The US flies 2 and 4 plane combat teams. many of the countries with Mig-29s do not.
US combat plane teams work closely with AWACS controllers that spot for them.

One of the few F15 Vs Mig-29 fights the Mig-29s lost, USAF F15c 2, IRAF Mig-29 0

Where did you get that? The F-15 first flew in 1972, the F-16 first flew in 1974. The MiG-29 flew in 1977.

That's also not what they're talking about when they say the MiG-29 is as good or better. They're talking about well trained, experienced pilots. A well trained pilot in a MiG-29 is at least as dangerous, if not more dangerous than any 4th generation Western fighter in a WVR fight.

A MiG-29 is pretty potent kinematically. The biggest issue regarding export sales is/was not avionics as suggested above (though that no doubt played a part, it isn't terribly difficult to rectify -- witness the MiG-35), but rather Mikoyan's history of providing -- or not providing, as it were-- spares and replacements in a timely manner. And quality control was scandalous. Engine reliability and fuel-consumption is/was less than ideal. Couple that with more recent history (google "Algeria MiG-29"), and it's not hard to see why the MiG-35 isn't taking-off (oh, a pun!) in the export market, capable though it may be.

The base Mig29 has the potential to be something better if they strip out the avionics and replace them with better performing engines..

Pretty much the MiG-29M and later versions. Some countries like India also have "kitbashed" a bit with the avionics where it suited them. A mix of both western and the originally sourced Russian systems to overcome any percieved shortcomings.

So basically the aircraft aren't all that bad at what they do, it comes down to pilot training with actual (not simulated) flight hours and maintenance turn-around time. (Russia may be on top of it, but not a lot of countries they sell to.)

Right. In any huge purchase of a technologically complex long-lived product, you're not buying just the product---you're buying the vendor. Because you don't want a box or a toy, you want a capability.
