Something in the back of my mind tells me that understanding dark energy and dark matter will somehow be important for FTL/warp drives.

I think it's one of those experiments that you don't get chance to say oops when it goes wrong .

Sure you do. That's why they had the delay .. something went wrong.

They fixed it in a very novel fashion, and it's back up and running so apparently they do. Really seems like you are invested in them failing/being clueless, which is strange.

Just have a bad feeling about it , hope it goes ok and we get something out of it . But my view is It will only just kill us off quicker one way or another .

Or be one step closer to getting humanity to the stars so we don't get killed off.

ETA: If humanity never leaves Earth it's a near 100% chance we go extinct sooner or later. We are one cosmic collision away from it.

I hope we do go to the stars and transform humanity , but IMHO we will only see destruction and mayhem .

Well then you should like the Hadron Collider, because it's about the science that you support, not death and destruction.

So the fearmongering about micro-black holes begins again?

Within current knowledge, these micro-black holes die within microseconds, as they emit Hawking's radiation. During that time they don't have enough time to grow huge and swallow whole Earth and Universe. That is, if current models are right of course

I think this is great experiment. If we find Dark Matter, it would change everything. The possibilities would be endless, as Dark Matter is linked to Anti-matter.

The LHC is a complex piece of equipment and of considerable size. It's not immune to problems. Even the simplest toaster will eventually have problems - that doesn't mean that the operator of the toaster "doesn't know what he is doing".

It doesn't matter if they last 1000 years they can't eat the earth.

They have less mass than a proton, which means they can't suck anything in at all.

So even after a billion years they still couldn't swallow my soda can, let alone the planet.

There is absolutely no danger period.

Dark matter is not linked to anti matter.

We already know about anti matter.

It isn't a mystery at all.

We use antimatter daily here on earth right now.

Hospitals use positrons every single day in scans.

A positron is a anti electron.

I believe it was a short circuit caused by a small piece of metallic debris

Is it true that the Pope Francis said this about Cern, I cant find any other sources but the one listed at end of this comment.

“My fellow Christians, we are living in desperate times” he told the crowd. “Science is about to test the limits of God and his creation. God has created boundaries between the world of the living and the world of the dead. Are these scientists about to unleash upon us the Gates of Hell?” he asked his followers, visibly shaken. “Are these the days of darkness spoken of in the Bible? Are the hordes of demons lurking in the fiery pits of Hell about to be thrust upon the world? These are questions we must ponder before allowing scientists to proceed to such experiments” he explained.
