Doesn't this thing have some sort of regulation on what they can and cannot do yet? When I first learned about it I was wary, now I just try not to think about the LHC because they could literally tear apart the universe.

But hey, what does Stephen Hawking know...? (Enough to warn them to quit messing with things we don't understand)

here another link to the source, the cern: cern lhcr

looks like another run to understand the higgs-boson, but if they open a portal, i ll drive down there in a minute :-)

Relax!!!

If they actually makeca black hole it will weigh less than a proton.

Meaning it can't attract anything.

It won't eat the earth or the universe.

A "black hole" just means a mass that is infinitely larger than it surface area.

It doesn't by necessity mean death and or destruction.

Wait 100 years when they aren't accelerating things to 99.99999999 percent the speed of light(did I add too many 9s?) But accelerating them to 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999909999999999999999999999999999099999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 99999909999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999...etc...%
The speed of light.

We arecreally going to see some crazy then.

These will be space based collider's.

At the minimum astroid belt distance to ensure we are safe from a minimal "event" happening.

Don't worry, you are safe.

A black hole created by this will just evaporate instantly, as its surface area to mass ratio is too small to contain it.

I think the article is a bit sensationalist... like most are when reporting on the Large Hardon Collider.

It is a bit sensationalistic.

What the experiment hopes to accomplish is finding evidence that parallel universes exist, NOT opening a portal between our universe and a parallel one.

Detection of mini black holes at the LHC could indicate parallel universes in extra dimensions

If they are successful in opening the portal to another dimensional universe something nasty could be released.

Like every other time the LHC was supposed to kill us all , I predict absolutely nothing will happen and the earth will keep on spinning. But just for fun. The black hole they are going to make is tiny. But what if an infinite amount of parallel universes all do the same experiment at the same time in the same place.

This is news. This would prove the current theoretical physics views on the multiverse and the nature of gravity . As far as mini black holes go , they have already created many . However , they are so tiny and have such a short life span they are basically unable to study them as acutely as they would like. The LHC produces the relative same amount of energy that a mosquito in flight produces in minutes . Far short of the energy needed to create something that would pose a danger such as a black hole or an opening into another universe . However , good heads up.

Um way wrong!!!!!

14terrarlectronvolts is described as a fully loaded super carrier hitting the shore at 30knots.

Way more than what you described.

The energy to accelerate to C is exponential, to get to 100% of C or the speed of light for even a single proton would take infinite energy....hence impossible.

They are accelerating them at 99.99999999% of C....hence a lot if power.

Your assessment is way if by factors upon factors.

It consumes so much power, they have to limit its hi output to the months the least electric in Europe is used to keep the costs down.

But yes they spend millions of dollars per day on the power of mosquito's wings....=fail.

Why do people need to start a thread about annihilation at tea time? It's put me off my Heng Sengwiches big time talking about these mad buggers in Geneva, and when we/they? don't know properly what a black hole is!

It honestly sounds like poppycock to me.

I hope he doesn't turn it up to 11...

I hope they dont divide by zero myself!!

I have to ask. WHat happens if the mini black hole breaks containment and acheives self sustaining mass?

Its mass is thst of a proton or less....so what.

It will evaporate all but instantly.

Here comes another one.....you stated how much power it consumes , not how much energy is released. As they have only smashed photons together (and not nearly as many as were released), the energy output is tiny.
