JOHANNESBURG – The Presidency has confirmed Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane has been killed in a car accident in the early hours of this morning.
The African National Congress (ANC) says Chabane died in car crash on the N1 Highway in Polokwane around 1am this morning.
The party says Chabane’s car collided with a truck that was making a U-turn on the highway between Gauteng and Limpopo.
Two of the minister’s security staff, who were travelling with him, also died in the collision.
ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says, “He died instantly with his two protectors. This is quite sad news because he’s one of the most committed cadres, not just had he played a role in government but also in the ANC.”
While more details surrounding the circumstances of the crash remain sketchy, President Jacob Zuma says the minister’s untimely death is a loss to his Cabinet and the country as a whole.
Spokesperson for the Presidency Mac Maharaj has described Chabane as a valuable asset to the country.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this untimely death by an outstanding cadre of our liberation struggle and a competent accomplished and dependable member of Cabinet.”
Chabane was a minister in the Presidency who lead the planning for the funeral of former President Nelson Mandela.
