(Bloomberg) -- Jon Stewart, the popular host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” is leaving the job he’s held since 1999.

Stewart will depart later this year, Michele Ganeless, president of the Viacom Inc. pay-TV channel, announced Tuesday in a statement.

“For the better part of the last two decades, I have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart,” Ganeless said in the statement. “His comedic brilliance is second to none.”

Ugh! This sucks! It will leave a huge hole in reasoned social and political commentary.

Nah don't worry. Someone will step up in his place.

Look at how good John Oliver was.

Man both colbert and stewart, bummer.

Oliver needs to come back to his roots and get back on basic cable for us peasants with no HBO!

Exactly.

I just think he's a tool serving certain agendas. Look at how he's impacted the younger generation.

No way the OLIVE show "Last week tonight" is too good and he cannot say what he says on commercial TV!!! Most TV stations have drug commercials!!!!! Go to uTube and search on John Oliver there is entire season 1 there as we just started last Sunday Season 2 after a diet of no Olive for 3 months....

Also I did not like how Stewart was getting so political.... I do not believe in either party and do not believe US or UK has a two party system. His rhetoric was wearing on me... which is why I switched to the Olive.....

Jonny boy Stewart was never this good....

I have learned more on these above three eps than my entire watch of The Daily Show..... This is NEWS Bill Hicks Style... Educate whilst laughing.... then when reality sets in sad..... especially when you hear the last link... "Civil Forfeiture" NO way did Jon Stewart ever do an ep like this.... BTW ATS Where did America go????

Kinda sad... was wondering what the back and forth w/ Odenkirk was about when they kidded about leaving before it's stale... well time rolls on and perhaps there will be another entertaining and informative venue for current events ...besides, most of the Daily Show's magic came from the excellent researchers and writers, there.... though Stewart's interviews were astounding sometimes.

Maybe they'll hire him for 60 minutes... heh.. .speaking of dinosaurs

I know.

They talk about how Fox isn't news while getting their "news" from Stewart.

Puhlease. Daily Show is commentary. Fox is commentary. MSNBC is commentary. CNN is commentary. Some are just more just more rigorous and/or culturally relevant than others.

Hell, does straight news even exist anymore?

Stewart is just trading jobs with Brian Williams.
The timing of both is NOT a coincidence.

Right when the whole Brian Williams thing started, I told everyone I knew that Stewart would be in the anchor chair at NBC soon.
I dont know...maybe they're both leaving to start their own thing. I could see that as well.
But, the banter between the pair on the Daily Show does raise eyebrows with this announcement today.

CNN media analyst just said Williams could go to Daily Show. LoL! Especially given his proclivity for late night TV appearances.

Maybe you're at least partially on the right track owlbear....
