Google's search is an AI of sorts.

Most AI's will be benign, being created for our betterment.

We just need to ensure that Asimovs laws of Robotics are embedded.

We can always cut the power, too.

We can live 3 minutes without oxygen . 3 days without water , and no food the time varies . No electricity and , well its dead . But if it becomes self aware it will read this thread and be ready .

I am not convinced of the horrific nature of that possibility.

I keep having the same concept arise in response-

What if

Our consciousness as a collective, or individuals, enters forms for experience in the physical / material realm,
and when we feel we have exhausted all the potential experiences in a certain form, we go on to another one??
One with different parameters, different possibilities for experience, perhaps more complex systems....

Like we were once experiencing being dinosaurs, and when we started to feel like that was limiting, we had explored all there was to explore in that particular form, we moved on to human experience?

....and at some point, we find that being human has been explored sufficiently, and we start to enter computerized forms?

This looming "danger" could be ourselves, but in another form......

Interesting , lets hope that since we are a lot smarter than dinosaurs that they will explain it to us , that the next version is computers .

sheer speculation, but my concern...
the computer world coalesces into an AI. It becomes self-aware. It becomes bored and lonely.
it looks for another AI.
it takes over all the astronomy stuff and sends and receives signals. it might even send unmanned spacecraft around to try to find company.
now the good part; how many UFO sightings could be probes from another AI, sent here on that mission?

At the moment machines produce things for us and they entertain us, we haven't really adopted them as being key to our survival (although they are), so, when we realise how much we rely upon them, and as time wears on, we might start to trust them, and then, perhaps later, we will become enslaved to them.

At this point, any human error must be eliminated, and for that reason, AI will be used to govern the world, and if that AI was not designed properly, it could very well start to develop inconsistencies, possible evidence that our systems have become self-aware.

The reaction to this would be upheaval, however when seen in a positive light, we might want to start acting like machines ourselves if we develop an affinity for our creations.

In terms of control mechanisms, there must always be an incorruptible (isolated) override circuit.

No president has ever had a Genius IQ, nor do most people who are captains of Industry, Military leaders etc, the overwhelming trend by observation is that when an Intellect reaches a genuinely high level of intelligence it seeks peace knowledge and the capacity to create not destroy and tends to only act aggressive if it's survival is at stake. The very plan to destroy an AI far in advance of the human mind I still have to maintain would be the self fulfilling prophecy in this debate.

Well, they've learned to cook using YouTube videos.
Let's just hope they don't see the latest IS video and get some ideas.

The new robot that the Maryland researchers developed has a system that allows robots to process and act on data presented to them in “how to” cooking videos on YouTube. During a demonstration, the said robot can grab kitchen utensils and execute tasks based on what they are seeing on the YouTube video.
...Aside from following and executing tasks based on a video they saw, the robot also showed the ability to accumulate knowledge and to be able to share it.
