So, I just got a fund-raising email from C4L about an AR-15 giveaway they are doing. Really? What does an AR-15 have to do with liberty other than a connection to the 2nd amendment? Having contributed to numerous political causes over my life, I get emails from all sorts of political interest groups, but this has to be the strangest one I've received in awhile. If the winner of this AR-15 ends up in a highly publicized incident, I'm going on vacation for awhile. ;p

FYI if one wins any type of firearm in a contest they still have to pass a background check and go through all of the hopos to purchase a firearm based on their state of residence. There are lots of firearm giveaways. If this concerns you you should never "like" a gun store or range on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter. You can even still get a free rifle opening a bank account in some places.

What does a rifle have to do with liberty? How about the liberty to be able to effectively defend your family, property, and self from threats? A huge part of Liberty is the ability to maintain and protect that Liberty. If you don't understand this I would highly advise that you pick up a history book, any history book.

The Greeks maintained their liberty through their city-state and military. It had nothing really to do with individual power.

Oh, you mean the Greeks who had a slave class? Yeah, "Liberty" was important there.

Everyone had slaves back then.

You are correct. Then guns were invented. Now slaves aren't so common.

ETA: At least, what we traditionally think of as a slave is less common. We're all still slaves.

Spartacus proved that you don't need guns to end slavery. Egalitarianism is a moral philosophy, not a product of our technology level, and liberty can be either atomistically maintained or collectively protected, but I think history shows more often than not that a house scattered, no matter how powerful will succumb to attrition eventually.

The AR-15 has become a symbol in the quest to restore the Constitutional Republic. The socialists even equate the AR-15 with a symbollic link to freedom (2nd amendment battles). The AR-15 is also a multipurpose tool as other posters have mentioned.

You are very "big picture" and I can appreciate that, but most people are not. Egalitarianism may not be achieved based on our technological level, but it most certainly cannot be maintained if the technological level of those defending it drops too far from the technological level of those that would work to destroy it.

It's very obvious why Americans associate the AR-15 (or any other firearm, for that matter) with Liberty.

I don't know if we can win via a strategy of violence. Even if we disarmed ourselves willingly, we can always buy AR-15s and have them smuggled into the country should we need them, but once we create a condition of sedition that justifies the employment of military force against us, no one will be on our side. The best way to bring down an empire is to create infrastructural instabilities that pull it out of a state of homeostasis. If you are going to foment rebellion, you need to do so in a way that encourages sympathy. The best method for that historically is highly publicized acts of nonviolent resistance and martyrdom. Also, if you want to win, you can't be so unflexibly principled on every issue. You've got to generate consensus and that can't happen under conditions of absolutist moral philosophy. Look at people like Che Guevara. I might not agree with his politics, but he synthesized agreement from disparate interest groups and was highly successful in his efforts to change the political power structure of his country. The same mechanisms can be repeated. No empire is immune. Especially not a hydra like the global government.

I still think the Kolashnikov is a better rifle. More versitle and less prone to jams. Plus the ammo is dirt cheap.

Are we allowed to gush about a specific brand of gun or is that a T&C no-no? Mods? I like the saiga-12 and that Russian guy in the youtube videos demonstrating its abilities. It is so impressive. ;p

You can't maintain any level of freedom without the means to defend it. The 2nd amendment is all about the ability to defend freedom from government, amongst other things. I don't get why you needed to even ask that question.

I don't need much. This is how you maintain liberty without the means to defend it.

Woah there turbo. Blatant disrespect for ones opinions sounds weak. Please show respect and be polite. I meant that receiving a junk plastic gun made like a Chinese toy wouldn't be the same as purchasing an ak

Terms and conditions is a race card that's pulled quite often here.

Any who An Ar 15 would get indeed get you into the spotlight. I thought it was illegal for Americans to own class 3 weaponry like that unless affiliated with law enforcement or military.
