To take everyone's mind off of Ebola I'm going to tell you a real lost treasure story...

In 1903, a wagon train from the Denver mint, loaded with new dimes destined for Phoenix, Arizona disappeared somewhere between Crawford ranch and Montrose Colorado.

Four to six wooden kegs of new dimes were loaded on four separate wagons traveling as a group.
Several years later, treasure hunters found the remains of four wagons at the rim of a canyon where a side wash fell off into the river ravine.

Though they were able to gather several gallons of dimes along the Gunnison River near the north rim of Black Canyon, more treasure still awaits the more daring.

Now I know many of you are thinking, why would anyone care about looking for these lost kegs of 1903 dimes? and the answer is each of those dimes has a value of.

Price:

$65.99

And I know your next question is... if them damn dimes are so valuable why isn't everyone going to Black Canyon to scoop up bucket's full of those dimes... and to answer I have to say... getting to the bottom of Black Canyon, where the river is... is not the easiest place to get too...

So what do ya all think... want to go looking for dimes with me?

ummm lets say i just break my leg and not my neck in getting there

Without health insurance, the average cost to treat a broken leg is over $10,000.

internet never lies

the reward is not higher than the risk, and even if i manage to get out alive out of it, im not a mule and the climb must be the hardest part.

GOOD LUCK though

O boy I would just love to do that!
When I was little my 18 year old brother used to bring me along on his gold-panning adventures and although he never found anything as far as I know, the memories are still fresh and compelling. If only I lived close enough to accompany you.

you do know that ... not when but where it was minted makes all the difference.
Astonish ing 1907 Denver Mint Double Eagle ($20 gold coin) Sells for More Than a Half Million Dollars

but getting back to dimes... the granddaddy of all dimes is the "Proof 1876-CC Dime"
CC means it was a Carson City Mint dime.

Seated Liberty dime last traded hands June 12, 2010, when Legend Numismatics sold the coin for more than $250,000 for placement in the Simpson Collection, according to Legend’s Laura Sperber.

how'd you like to have a pocket full of those dimes?
