Halifax Regional Police are at the intersection of Dawn Drive and Windmill Road in Dartmouth after receiving a report that an armed man was seen.

Police went to the area between Akerley Boulevard and Wright Avenue at about 11:45 a.m. About 10 police vehicles and at least one police dog were on the scene.

The man was reportedly spotted in the area of Dartmouth Metals Ltd.

Workers there said they had been going about their usual routine when they were told to leave immediately.

Police are currently clearing the area.

Sgt. Jeff Carr of Halifax Regional Police said the initial call came in at 11:36 a.m. The caller reported seeing a man with a long gun pacing back and forth on a roof of one of the buildings at Dartmouth Metals.

Carr said no other witnesses have emerged to back up that report. He said plain-clothed officers were on the scene immediately and didn't see any sign of a gun.

Carr said police believe the buildings are now empty and they're going to search the buildings, which are contained within a fenced-in area. The people doing the search are experts in their field, he added.

“Once they are confident the area is safe then they will give the OK.”

Carr acknowledged it's a tense time for policing given the recent tragedy in Moncton. But he said anytime there's a report of a firearm sighting police exercise extreme caution.

He said he did not expect it would take long to clear the scene.

Police had blocked a section of Windmill Road for a short time, but have since allowed traffic through.

At about 2:15 p.m., a man came out and was cuffed by three police officers. But it was later determined he was not involved. Police said the man heard what was happening and actually jumped the fence to get a closer look.

He got into his vehicle and police escorted him home.

At about 1:30 p.m., police had their guns drawn as a man came out with his hands up. It was quickly determined that he was an employee.

The employee, Ivan Hall, said he was surprised to learn of what was going on and he was told to stay in the building until police called for him.

When asked for reaction to the police presence, he said "No one knows what's happening." He added he can understand why they're being cautious.

The owner of the facility told The Chronicle Herald there were reports of someone, or multiple people, on the roof with a weapon but nobody at his shop could confirm that.

An employee at a nearby car dealership said he saw something on the roof but couldn't be sure exactly what it was. The employee didn't want to give their name.

Maybe someone just got paranoid after the moncton thing and was seeing things. Who knows.

With this happening in the Burnside industrial,I'd be inclined to speculate someone saw what they thought was a man on a roof with a shotgun, but could in fact have been a roofer carrying a tool, and the shots fired sound him using it. Hubby was a steel roofer in Hali for a company out of burnside. Just a brainstormed thought between the two of us.

That sounds like the most logical explanation to me. Someone goes up on the roof with a sledgehammer and starts breaking up some cracked cement in order to replace it. Or maybe something hit the roof and made a sound like a gunshot and the man goes up to investigate.
