Kroger Rejects GMO Milk

www.enn.com

Most Americans don't understand GMO foods. But that appears to be changing. Surveys consistently show that a majority of Americans are unaware that more than 70% of processed foods they eat contain ingredients from GE corn, soybeans, canola, and cotton. But Kroger's recent ban of sales of GMO milk suggest something is afoot. Clearly Americans are increasingly aware of one GE product in their food, and they don’t like it.

It looks like people are starting to wake up to the world of GMO grains.

Our European counterparts are already way ahead of us and have laws in place banning all GMO grains and food in most countries.

When you see it happening at the consumer level that means people are putting pressure on retailers.

This is a very positive move in the right direction. Congrats to every person that was part of this movement.

Why is this a positive move? Were GM foods found to be harmful to humans? Or is it just paranoia because something is not "natural"?

Not a dumb question at all. Most foods these days are made from genetically modified grains. Have a look at the definition.

Genetically Modified Food GMO

Animals in most cases will refuse to eat GMO grains, over non-modified.

GMO's are Genetically Modified Organisms

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using the genetic engineering techniques generally known as recombinant DNA technology. With recombinant DNA technology, DNA molecules from different sources are combined in vitro into one molecule to create a new gene. This modified DNA is then transferred into an organism causing the expression of modified or novel traits. The product is also known as an Genetically Engineered Organism or GEO.

The term "GMO" has historically been defined as organisms whose genetic makeup has been altered by conventional cross breeding or by "mutagenesis" breeding, as these methods predate the discovery of the recombinant DNA techniques. However, this term is now interchangeable with Genetically Engineered Organism.

This is great news for me, as an employee of Wholefoods Market.

Demand for all-natural and organic products has been on the rise.
I'm sure there's a few members here who've probably noticed
supermarkets like Publix and Winn-Dixie are beginning to catch
onto this very healthy trend.

While the prices of all-natural and organic products can be high,
the more competition there is, the cheaper they'll get.
